FAQs

When should I arrive? You should arrive at Purcell School, Bushey between 11am and 1pm on Saturday 19th July

When should I leave? The course will end after the final concert which takes place at 2pm on Thursday 24th July

Where does the course take place? Cadenza is held at The Purcell School for Young Musicians, just outside London. The school offers outstanding facilities, including concert halls, practice rooms, and on-site accommodation in secure, modern boarding houses.

What’s included in the course fee? The full board fee (£830) covers: All tuition (chamber music coaching, individual lessons, workshops) Accommodation for 5 nights Practice room facilities All meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) Concerts and performance opportunities Social activities and pastoral support

How do I apply? Visit our Apply page and complete the online application form. You’ll need to upload your video and pay a £100 deposit, which is refunded if your application is not accepted.

When is the deadline to apply? We accept applications on a rolling basis, but places are limited and the course is often fully booked well before the summer. We strongly recommend applying by early April to secure your place.

Are scholarships available? Yes. We offer a very limited number of bursaries through the Pamela Spofforth Fund to help cover tuition and accommodation costs for violinists that wish to focus on chamber music. Please email us to apply.

What is a typical day like? Each day includes a mix of: Chamber group rehearsals and coaching One-to-one lessons Workshops or masterclasses Practice time and ensemble playing Concerts, informal sightreading sessions and a cabaret in the evenings There’s also time to relax, socialise, and enjoy the campus.

Will I be placed in a chamber group? If you wish! Chamber music groups are mostly predecided before the course begins so that you have time to prepare your part. If you wish to take part in more chamber music groups these can often be arranged at the beginning of the course and there is flexibility for students to play as much as they wish to.

What if I’m coming from overseas? We welcome international students. The Purcell School is easily accessible from Heathrow, Luton, or London airports, and we can provide information on airport transfers. We can also provide visa support letters if required. It is possible to arrange to borrow instruments, particularly cellos if necessary. Please email us for further information.

Is the course suitable for adult learners? Yes. We are proud to offer a friendly and inclusive environment where adult amateur players can learn alongside younger students. We ensure chamber groups are age-appropriate and supportive.

What’s your refund policy? The £250 deposit is non-refundable unless your application is not accepted. The remaining balance is due by 1st June, and we offer partial refunds in case of cancellation before that date.
